The Besom in York was launched in February 2007 and we are currently working with many churches in York.

The Besom in York is a bridge between those who want to give and those who are in need. It is here to help people to show love in practical ways. We do this by helping those in the church to give their time, money, skills and things to those who are in need. The first steps to helping those in need are often the hardest - that’s why the Besom is here – to help the church effectively make a difference.

How to get involved

The Besom in York takes that which someone wants to give, whether it is time, money, skills or things, and finds someone who genuinely needs it. It does this by taking referrals from professional organisations such as Social Services, housing associations and 25 other professional agencies. The emphasis is on making giving easy and enjoyable.

We accept good quality things – anything to start a home from a spoon to a sofa. We want to bless our recipients with the best – more than often we meet people who have nothing but a bin bag of belongings – so whether we’re giving them a cooker or can opener – it has to be the very best - good enough to use in your own home.

We have use of a van that goes out to pick-up and deliver things most weeks, usually during the day on a Thursday or on a Monday or Wednesday evening. Individual Time Givers can drive and help out on the van – making a massive difference for those in need.

We also have many groups of time givers who give their time to decorate, paint, clean, clear, garden and cook for those in need. These teams are from many churches and Christian groups in York.

We also accept gifts of money – again this is specific to what the givers wants it to go to. For example in the past we’ve been given money to buy ladders (for projects), money to install cookers that have been given to Besom or for running costs. Money can be given as a one off or on a regular basis.
