The Besom in York was launched in February 2007, since then we've been helping the church in York to serve those in need.

The Besom in York is a bridge between those who want to give and those who are in need. It is here to help people to show love in practical ways. We do this by helping those in the church to give their time, money, skills and things to those who are in need. The first steps to helping those in need are often the hardest - that’s why the Besom is here – to help the church effectively make a difference.

How to get involved

The Besom in York takes that which someone wants to give, whether it is time, money, skills or things, and finds someone who genuinely needs it. It does this by taking referrals from professional organisations such as Social Services, Housing associations, Health Professionals and 35+ other professional agencies. The emphasis is on making giving easy and enjoyable.

We accept good quality things – anything to start a home from a spoon to a sofa. We want to bless our recipients with the best – more than often we meet people who have nothing but a bin bag of belongings – so whether we’re giving them a cooker or can opener – it has to be the very best - good enough to use in your own home.

Time on the van

We have use of a van that goes out to pick-up and deliver things most weeks, usually 2-3 day-times in a week and some evenings and saturdays. Individual Time Givers can drive and help out on the van – making a massive difference for those in need.

Group time givers

We also have many groups of time givers who give their time to decorate, paint, clean, clear, garden and cook for those in need. These teams are from many churches and Christian groups in York.

Money givers

We also accept gifts of money – again this is specific to what the givers wants it to go to. For example in the past we’ve been given money to buy ladders (for projects), money to install cookers that have been given to Besom or for running costs. Money can be gift aided, given as a one off or on a regular basis.

the Internship

It is with great anticipation and faith that we are launching the Besom internship starting in September 2014.

Do you want a year to grow in faith? Do you want to develop your prayer life? Do you want to consider God's heart for the poor? Do you want the opportunity to see the church in action and equip them to make a difference? Do you want to see lives changed in York? And lastly it's a chance to let God ask you this question. "How will I choose to live my life as I do when they live their lives as they do?

“Hi, I have been meaning to contact you for sometime, firstly to say thank you again to the wonderful group from Besom who tackled my large back garden. It brought tears to my eyes the next day when I opened my blinds and took in what they had done not only physically but spiritually, they have given me hope. I thank the Lord daily for finding you… …By the way since the garden has been done at the back I sit out every evening and have quiet time with my thoughts and the company of three hedgehogs which I can see now that the garden is tidy. Thank you for giving me hope, God Bless you all.”

“It was a really hard day of work for us all, we got very dirty and smelly and we didn’t get big thanks for it, but that's not what it was about. It's about serving someone else without conditions being attached. It was great".
