The Besom in Taunton

The Besom in Taunton started in 2005 at Taunton Vineyard Christian Fellowship with a group of time-givers who wanted to give practical help to those in our town in most need. Offering their help through The Besom they were able to decorate, clear gardens and do DIY projects for the recipients they met through contacts made with professional agencies through The Besom. Home-groups caught the vision and offered their time and skills and gradually other churches heard about The Besom and joined us too. Currently we have All Saints Trull - Taunton, St James’ Church - Taunton, Taunton Vineyard, Canon St Family Church - Taunton, Oakwood Church - Taunton, North St. Church - Taunton, and Alive Christian Ministries in Bridgwater, with Rockwell Green Christian Fellowship and Wellington Baptist Church in Wellington currently give through us.

How to get involved:

Giving Time and Skills

By April 2010 time-givers from these churches have completed 76 practical projects for recipients in our 3 towns of Taunton, Bridgwater and Wellington. We shall be pleased to direct new church time-givers to future projects too. You may have skills that you enjoy using and would like to offer, for example, DIY skills or cooking a cake/meal for a family in need.

Giving Things

As time-givers visited recipients’ homes we became even more aware of the need for household items and furniture that are so often lacking. We offer a free service to the giver by which we collect and deliver your household items or furniture to people in need. Our criteria for accepting things is that the people in need have few choices so we make the choice for them and only accept and pass on really good quality items.

Giving Money

You can give money to any area of your choice. You can give either through The Besom or to The Besom. For example you could give money towards the cost of buying paint for painting projects or you might wish to fund a specific gift – a washing machine for instance to a homeless centre. If you would like to give internationally please contact Besom HQ. We will ensure that 100% of your gift goes directly to the cause. The choice is yours.

Collecting on our Van Rounds

We collect and deliver on our van rounds on Wednesday/ Thursday mornings. Do get in touch if you would like to give your time in this way.

Prayer Support

We would welcome your prayerful support. Come and join us on Tuesday afternoons or contact us for our prayer e-mail requests.

"I just wanted to say how grateful I am for the wonderful job you’ve done. The hallway looks wonderful. I would also like to say it was lovely to meet you all – you are all very kind and the prayer afterwards was very touching. Thank you for all your help and hard work."

Recipient

"We very much appreciate being able to serve folk in our community through The Besom in Taunton. We have made some connections with people that have become enduring friendships. Many of our church members have been involved in the projects and have been blessed in the process. Besom is a great way for the church to demonstrate its commitment to be relevant in our society."
