The Besom in Taunton

The Besom in Taunton started in May 2005 and is pleased to serve the local churches in Taunton, Wellington and surrounding villages. Our aim is to help those in our churches who have a heart to give to those in need. We therefore act as the bridge between the giver and the recipient in need and so enable the churches to make a difference in our communities.

How you can get involved

Through The Besom in Taunton you can give your time and skills, your household items and food and your money.

Giving things

Like many Besoms we are pleased to collect good quality furniture and household items of good quality which we are pleased to deliver to those being housed - often without anything at all. Our van runs are weekly so please contact us if you have something to give and we will arrange a collection.. Our criteria for accepting things is that people in need often don’t have a choice, so we make it for them and only accept good quality items that will encourage and bless them.
In 2011 churches started to give us food items too in response to an increasing awareness of the need for food in times of crisis. Times when jobs are lost, times when benefits are delayed or simply when there isn’t any money left.
Please contact us if you or your church would like to give towards our food boxes.

Giving time As a group

Many of our givers give time in groups, either as a church home-group or as a mixed group from the same church. By Autumn 2015 we have directed over 220 groups on projects such as gardening, decorating, or DIY tasks . One church group runs a cooking class for recipients from a Housing Association.
Sometimes it’s fun to mix givers from several churches together on a project and that’s always fun and builds relationships and unity.

Giving time as an individual

You may like to join our van team or deliver our food boxes or help with administration. Perhaps you might like to collect small items from among your church or locality or give time restoring furniture or sorting/packing or cleaning items given to us. Please contact us and we will find where your time can be best used.

Giving time as a Prayer Supporter

You are welcome to join us for prayers. By joining our team of Prayer Intercessors you will receive details of where and when we meet for prayer for The Besom, as well as receive our monthly Prayer Letter. Please email us to find out how to part of our prayer team.

Giving Money

You can give your money to any area of your choice - for example towards our project expenses, buying new items for those being housed or supporting our general running costs. Everything we do for the recipients is free.
How do we find those most in need?
By working closely with professional agencies, such as Social Workers, Health Visitors, Housing Support Services or local Homeless hostels, we can be sure that we are referred to the most needy who really need help.

"I just wanted to say how grateful I am for the wonderful job you’ve done. The hallway looks wonderful. I would also like to say it was lovely to meet you all – you are all very kind and the prayer afterwards was very touching. Thank you for all your help and hard work."

"We very much appreciate being able to serve folk in our community through The Besom in Taunton. We have made some connections with people that have become enduring friendships. Many of our church members have been involved in the projects and have been blessed in the process. Besom is a great way for the church to demonstrate its commitment to be relevant in our society."
