The Besom in St. Austell
The Besom in St Austell is a bridge between those who want to give and those in need in our community. We believe the first steps to helping are often the hardest because we don't know how to or where the need is. Besom aims to make those first steps possible and enjoyable for the giver.
We began in October 2005: we’re a small group of Christians who seek to do God’s will by serving local churches enabling believers who have a heart to give to those in need, to make a difference locally.
Our Core Team organise Besom activities and we have been blessed to see God at work in matching given items to people’s needs.
How do we find those most in need? By working closely with professional agencies, such as social workers, health visitors, children’s and family centres, housing support services, women’s refuge or local homeless hostels, we can be sure that we are referred to the most needy who really need help.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
We can help you to give your time through us as an individual: whether you have an hour, half a day, or more – we can help you to give your time effectively. There are a number of things you could get involved in, for instance:
- visiting potential recipients and helping them assess their needs;
- driving the Besom van for deliveries and collections - spending time helping to deliver donated items and seeing people’s lives changed;
- being a church representative for Besom, keeping your fellowship informed about Besom and the latest prayer requests and answers to prayer;
- helping with administration; making and building relationships with referral agencies;
- offering practical skills: DIY etc, and – most importantly –
- giving time to pray.
We can help you to give time as a group. You could get together a group from church to paint, decorate, garden, clean or do some simple DIY for someone in need in the St Austell area. Just let us know where and when and we’ll find something that fits your group’s heart and skills.
If you have other ideas about how you could give your time or talents, just get in touch – we’re always open to suggestions!
Our criterion for accepting things is that people in need often don’t have a choice, so we make it for them and only accept good quality items that will encourage and bless them.
If you have furniture or household items (including electrical goods) that you’d like to pass on, please get in touch and we’ll arrange a collection. Our van runs are each Tuesday or occasionally by special arrangement.
The items we collect/receive are passed on to vulnerable people who really need them. These include, single parents, families or individuals living in poverty, and victims of domestic violence.
The Besom funds grassroots projects across the UK and overseas in areas of need specified by the giver. 100% of the money given goes to those in need.
Money given to Besom in St Austell has gone to buy white goods, pots and pans, cutlery and crockery, bedding, dining table and chairs, etc; and to running costs of the Besom van. Money can be given as a one-off or on a regular basis.
We meet on a Tuesday morning from 9 am. You would be welcome to join us for prayer and bible study (until about 10 am) before we set off for the ‘business of the day’. Please contact us for details.
We have no 'office hours', but messages can be left at any time on our phone or at our email address. We aim to respond to messages within a week.
