Dorking
The Besom in Dorking started in January 2007 and serves the town of
Dorking and the surrounding villages of Mole Valley. From small
beginnings, our vision is for it to grow and to involve members from
many churches in the area. We want to enable Christians to reach out
and make a difference in their own community.
As in every town, if you look
around and develop contacts within the social services, you find
there are people in real need of resources that we can give; be it
our time, our skills, things or money.
Since we started we have delivered
a cooker, fridges, wardrobes, chest of drawers, desks and all sorts
of good quality household items. Small groups from Church have got
involved in decorating projects and garden clearance for those in
need.
We have been blessed with the gift
of a van and more recently of warehouse space that we can start to
use as a base for the storage, sorting and distribution of things.
As yet we do not have regular days for collection of things or a van
run, but watch this space!
A core team meets approximately
three times a month to pray for the work of The Besom.
How you can become involved
Whether you are a group or an
individual who would like to work with others, there are many ways
you can get involved:
-
Giving good quality things (new
or as new)
-
Decorating, cleaning or
gardening as a group (just tell us what you would like to do,
how many you are and we will arrange a project for you).
-
Helping on the van, collections
and deliveries (let us know when you are available and we will
arrange it!)
-
Sorting, washing and ironing
clothes
-
Sorting toys and household
items
-
Making up starter packs

“The team were very flexible and
listened to what the family needed and worked around the
family. They let the family join in and helped them to feel
part of it. The team were terrifically helpful and very
light-hearted, and no one minded about the mess! The family
were inspired to carry on and do things for themselves after
the team had left”

“Since the team had cleared out the
rubbish from the garden, our family life has been completely
transformed. Thank you so much”.

“I was a little apprehensive when
undertaking my first Besom project but the experience was
amazing. I did it with my small group and working together
has made us much closer. We did some decorating for a local
family. They could not believe that we were willing to give
up a Saturday to help them, and without being paid! Nothing
is done at less than we would accept in our own homes and
all the furniture supplied is of a very good standard. I’d
like to think that we made a difference for that family”.
